Building a creative space can take many forms (and budgets).  If you missed the evolution of making a creative space for myself over the years, you might want to check out my blog post HERE.  I share some ideas of how I started carving out creative space on a small budget and how how it evolved over time as my crafting passion grew.

How to Design a Dream Creative Space ?

I admit to being overwhelmed when I started to design my dream creative space.  There was so much to consider.

So I started with brainstorming a list:

  • What would make my space better than I had before ?
  • What kind of things do I want to be able to do in the space?
  • How do I want to organize things ?
  • What are my don’t forget things to include ?
  • How do I want to decorate the space ?

Considering these questions helped me start to visualize what my Creative Space could be and look like.

What Would Make My Space Better Than Before ?

  1. Improve the lighting – before I had mainly task lighting and only 1 overhead light in a ceiling fan. I need the light to be more like daylight and over my entire space and not just 1 spot of light overhead
  2. No More Carpet – before I had ugly berber carpet that wasn’t good for creating with glue, paint, inks, small pieces of cardstock or embellishments or rolling my chair around as needed
  3. More Neutral Wall Color – before I had a dark golden yellow color that was left over from a previous use of the room. I prefer a more neutral color as  background for displaying my creations and create a more
  4. Larger Crafting Table – before I had one narrow desktop that everything was piled on and I had basically a 12X12 square of space to make anything which wasn’t enough space
  5.  Places for a couple of friends or family to craft with me- before I had no room for anyone except myself

What Kind of Things Will I Want to Do in the Space?

  1. Make creations with my Cricut…so machines, hand tools, materials and glue close at hand are important
  2. Stamping and inking cards and other project materials
  3. Sewing small craft projects
  4. Painting – art projects and blanks
  5. Manual die cutting and embossing for creating cards
  6. Iron On and Sublimation Projects…so printers and heat presses plus materials
  7. Content creating…. cameras and tech stuff for videos
  8. Craft business office…tracking and paper work
various types of craft supplies

How Do I Want To Organize Things ?

  1. I mostly sit when I craft so I prefer my most used things within reach
  2. I prefer things sorted and grouped by like items
  3. I don’t need things out where I can see them so drawers, boxes and bins work well

What Other Things I Should I Consider ?

  1. I am a messy crafter and like to clean as I go…so paper towels, wipes, mini vacuum
  2. Large craft desk area with big craft mat so I have elbow room to create and film
  3. Comfy chair without arms at my craft desk
  4. Plenty of electrical outlets…at craft desk, printers, sewing, lighting, etc
  5. A TV and music player to keep me company while I create
  6. A place to display my Cricut Cutie Collectibles

How Do I Want to Decorate the Space ?

  1. I prefer a neutral pallet on the wall and pops of color in decor to add interest
  2. I like white furniture
  3. I like hardwood floors
  4. I like flowers
  5. I like like personal memoriabila and things from my friends around me
  6. I like to display my creations I have made
  7. Have a natural light filled space

So what kind of questions would you put on your list ?

Answering all of these questions helped me start to design what I really needed in my new Creative Space.  It helped guide all my decisions after that for selecting colors and materials for my new creative space.
